TOP Doctors for Da Vinci Prostatectomy

da Vinci stands for cutting edge technology in robotic medical technology in the field of minimally invasive surgery. Since 2009, da Vinci has supported the more than 20-year expertise of Prof. Rassweiler in the field of gentle laparoscopy with great success and with three-dimensional precision, and is well established as a standard therapy in daily clinical use. Da Vinci technology combines the benefits of open surgery with traditional laparoscopy. The patient benefits significantly from fewer surgical complications, less blood loss, more favorable functional outcomes - especially early contagion -, better cosmetic results and faster postoperative recovery, and consistent preservation of the erectile nerves in potency preserving surgery.

Da Vinci Prostatectomy (DVP) is a high-precision, robotic and low-impact, minimally invasive surgery for prostate cancer patients, and is one of the most commonly performed surgeries today. If prostate cancer is localized, surgical removal of the prostate, along with cancer, is a safe and widespread treatment option with excellent long-term survival rates.

Results (the technique radical prostatectomy da Vinci). The procedure of radical prostatectomy we use can be expected to have the following results:

  • minimal risk of blood transfusion (1-3%)
  • Catheter time of 6 days
  • Early continence rate (3 months) of over 90%
  • Potency in patients under 55 in 75%
  • Clinical progression freedom depending on the tumor stage between 87 and 97%
  • 10 year survival between 91 and 99%

Thus, the intervention of the radical prostatectomy da Vinci has lost much of its terror to the patient.

Technology of the latest generation: Robotics Center at Helios University Hospital Wuppertal

PD MD von Rundstedt as the second head physician of urology introduces new surgical technique. Da Vinci® Operations Assistant supports surgeons in many disciplines.

"We are introducing robot-assisted urology. The Da Vinci® surgical assistant of the latest generation is an important part of our operating room and we have successfully operated on numerous patients," says the robotics specialist, who has learned this methodology in a structured 2-year training program in the USA.

When operating with the Da Vinci® operating system, a computer with fine equipment compensates the hand movements of the surgeon and also significantly expands his radius of action. More degrees of freedom, ie extremely manoeuvrable instruments, open up new fields of operation. Tiny tubes introduce instruments, light and cameras into the patient's body. The robot holds the devices and performs the necessary movements that the surgeon prescribes on the console. No trembling, no more power problems, no lack of vision on surgical areas - because the robot can also work in regions where the scalpel in hand does not get along well. It is always true: It does not operate the device, but the experienced surgeon, but he can be helped to make the surgery safer and have many more options.

The so-called telemanipulator does not execute any movement automatically or autonomously. Rather, it is a computer that transmits the surgeon's movement to micro-instruments. The movements are translated in a ratio of five to one on the instruments. That is, five centimeters of movement of the hand results in a centimeter adjustment of the instrument in the body. The instruments move absolutely jitter-free and precise. Human weaknesses will be eliminated, but human strengths will be strengthened: only those who already operate safely will work with the Da Vinci® device. "In the radical removal of tumors, accuracy and precision are the ultimate goal. With this device, we can do that even better," explains the urologist.

Especially, Da Vinci® helps with particularly fine surgical cuts, for example, during a prostate operation. The most delicate tissues need to be spared and at the same time the prostate, which surrounds the urethra and is surrounded by important nerves, removed. The prostate has the size of a chestnut and is of course difficult to reach on the back. Two cameras create a three-dimensional representation of the interior of the body.

Not every surgery can be done with the assistant. Von Rundstedt says: "Which surgical method a patient receives is completely individual. In some cases, conventional surgical procedures are more useful. Overall, the Da Vinci is a good addition to our spectrum. It is an advantage of the prostate center and also the other certified centers in a house of maximum care such as the Helios University Hospital, that there are many alternatives available under one roof."
