The goal of prostate cancer treatment is complete cure if the cancer has not progressed too far. If it has already spread strongly in the body, it can often only prevent it from further growth and relieve the patient's discomfort (palliative therapy).
In recent decades, the possibilities of prostate cancer treatment have greatly evolved. In principle, the treating physician may recommend one or more of the following strategies after the diagnosis of prostate cancer:
As reported by the German Society for Urology (DGU), 17 of 100 men over the age of 50 develop prostate cancer. Three of them die of it. However, as the carcinoma usually grows slowly and forms late metastases (secondary tumors), the chances are good that the cancer is detected in the course of screening tests before it becomes life-threatening. Many tumors can even be seen for many years without the need for surgery. However, if prostate cancer is not discovered early and regularly examined, the chances of recovery worsen. Once it has been scattered, it is no longer curable.
