In 11 years BC, Roman legionaries built their military camp on the bank of the Rhine River, but they were not the first inhabitants of the area. First people are known to dwell the territory were there as early as 14000 years ago, whilst the soldiers of the Roman Empire are considered the founders of the city. With the decline of Great Rome, the barbarians captured the city. It was destroyed almost to the ground, but people did not leave the place and the area was not devastated.

The name Bonn started appearing in written sources since year 1000. It is known that by the middle of the 13th century the City Council had been established in the city and judiciary existed. In 1289, after the Battle of Worringen that determined the further development of the Northwestern Regions of the Central Europe, Bonn had become the residence of Archbishop of Cologne, a powerful Catholic principal, that contributed a lot to the economic and cultural development of the city.

In 1794 Bonn was occupied by French troops for 21 years. During the occupation, the University of Friedrich-Wilhelm founded in 1786 was closed and opened again only in 1818. Together with resuming of educational activities, the Department of Medicine was opened in the University, which started more than 200-year tradition of medical treatment in Bonn.

After the First World War, the city of Beethoven was occupied again until 1926. In the last year of the occupation, the Pedagogical Academy, one of the oldest universities of the city, was founded.

In 1949, Bonn became the capital of Western Germany. In 1989, the city celebrated a double anniversary: 2000 years from the date of foundation and 40 years of Bonn as the capital, but as soon as in 1990 the status of the capital was given back to Berlin.

Residents of the former capital are proud that Bonn is a birthplace of a famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven who was born there in 1770. Since 1844, the festival in his honor is held in the city.
