History of Cologne

The city began its history with a tribe of the Ubii settled on the territory in the 1st century BC. When the Romans came in 39 year AD, on agreement with them the Ubii moved to the left bank of the Rhine. Oppidum Ubiorum (it was the Roman name of the settlement) became an outpost of the Roman Empire. Thanks to the efforts of Agrippina the Younger, the wife of the Emperor Claudius, in the year 50 the city received the status of a colony thus acquiring numerous privileges. Interesting, that the name of Cologne has its origin from that word “colony” transformed into the proper name.

The insurgency in Rome in 260 led to the appearance of the Gallic Empire. Mark Postum proclaimed himself the emperor and made Cologne his residence. For 14 years, Cologne was a part of the Gallic Empire. The defeat of Postum returned the city to the Roman Emperor.

After 795, Cologne became the residence of archbishops and retained the status for five centuries. The Battle of Warringham turned Cologne to the free city. The archbishop was left only justice. Cologne was independent till the 17th century.

The invasion of Napoleon's troops and the conquest of Germany by France did not affect the city much. Prudent city people agreed to join the French Empire voluntarily and thus did not lose a single person. In 1815, Cologne had joined to Prussia.

The Second World War brought destruction and devastation. Once again, the city began to restore its monuments of architecture, creating its own unique style and keeping its identity.
