TOP Doctors for Cardiology

Cardiology is the study of the heart and a branch of internal medicine. It deals with the structure of the heart, its function, the detection of heart diseases and their treatment.

Many people barely notice their heartbeat. But for some, the pump gets out of tune every now and then - it beats too fast, too slowly or irregularly. The symptoms of the three most common heart conditions are still too often overlooked.

Coronary heart disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation can be prevented in many cases by a healthy lifestyle. If the heart is already sick, typical symptoms are often not interpreted properly - which makes the disease all the more dangerous.

Bottrop doctor performs a novel implantation

At the Bottroper hospital, a heart patient gets a defibrillator directly under the skin. Only a few clinics do that.

Because the pumping power of a patient's heart stopped recovering, physicians at the Knappschaft hospital planted a defibrillator directly under his skin. Only a few clinics are capable of doing so. The KKH performed this implantation for the first time.

For the first few weeks after the infarction, the patient had been given medication and a portable defibrillator that he could wear on his body like a vest. "It protects patients from sudden cardiac death in the first time after an infarction," said MD Martin Grett, chief physician in cardiology and a recognized expert in the novel subcutaneous implantation.

The patient was 51 years old when he was hospitalized with a heart attack. It soon became apparent that he would also permanently retain heart failure. "In patients with persistent heart failure after infarction, there is a significantly increased risk of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias," says MD Martin Christ, chief physician of cardiology.

In conventional defibrillators, an electrode is advanced into the heart and attached to the heart muscle. The so-called subcutaneous defibrillator (S-ICD) can be implanted without contact to the heart under the skin. The risk of infection for the heart drops so much.
