About Prof. MD W. Petersen

Prof. Wolf Petersen has led the Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery Clinic of the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin as its Senior Consultant since 2008. The Clinic was established in 1974 as one of the first accident surgery clinics in Germany and, in 2016, was listed for the ninth time in succession in the Focus List of Top Hospitals in the field of orthopaedics and accident surgery. Prof. Petersen has also been the Deputy Medical Director of the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin since 2009.

As a specialist in orthopaedics and accident surgery, special accident surgery, sports medicine and physiotherapy, Prof. Petersen specialises in the treatment of injuries, conditions, deformities and strain injuries to the human musculoskeletal system, that is, bones, joints, muscles and tendons. So, Prof. Petersen and his team at the Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery Clinic of the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin treat conditions including sports injuries, bone fractures, joint wear (osteoarthritis), joint instability and congenital or acquired deformities of the extremities.

At the same time, the range of services of the Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery Clinic includes knee surgery, foot surgery, shoulder surgery, sports traumatology, age-related traumatology, artificial joint replacement (endoprosthetics) and spinal surgery. Here, one particular focus of Prof. Petersen is knee surgery for injury or signs of wear in the knee. So, in 2015, he had already been listed in the Focus List of Physicians as one of Germany’s top medical practitioners in the field of knee surgery for the eighth time.

In the field of knee surgery, Prof. Petersen and his team at the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin perform, inter alia, the implantation of artificial knee joints (knee prostheses), meniscus surgery such as partial meniscectomy, meniscal suture or meniscal transplantation and cruciate ligament surgery for injuries to the anterior or posterior cruciate ligament. The treatment of cartilage damage by means of cartilage debridement, cartilage / bone transplantation or cartilage cell transplantation and correction of the mechanical axis (corrective osteotomy) for bowlegs or knock-knees are also among Prof. Petersen’s range of services.

If possible and reasonable, all procedures at the Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery Clinic of the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin are performed minimally invasively, i.e. with as small as possible skin incisions and access routes. As a rule, this takes place with the aid of arthroscopy, which is employed above all in the knee, shoulder and ankle joint.
