Breast augmentation, liposuction or facelifting are no longer taboo topics. The market with cosmetic surgery is booming and there are also winners in Southern Hessen, Germany.
Shortly before 5 pm, the children's gymnastics will be over soon. Three mothers are waiting to pick up the little ones - and talking along the way, whether they want to put under the knife soon. So that the breast looks like it did when the children were not yet born. Ten years ago, such scenes were rare. If one decided on the path of plastic surgery, one kept it to himself and at most consecrated the family. Today, the topic of cosmetic surgery is no longer so much taboo. The beauty clinics also notice that. "In our minds, a real change has taken place, and many of our patients are very open about the subject, especially within their circle of friends," says Rosenpark Clinic for Aesthetic-Operative Dermatology and Plastic Surgery in Darmstadt.
About 10 000 patients are treated annually.
This openness is good for business. Cosmetic Surgery Worldwide is a billion dollar market that is growing. The International Plastic Surgery Society recorded a total of 23.6 million interventions in 2016, ten percent more than in the previous year (2015: 21.7 million, 2014: 20.2 million). Most were in the US (4.2 million), Brazil (2.5), Japan (1.1) and Italy (1). Germany ranks ninth in the statistics with 730 437 interventions.
Also in the Rosenpark Clinic, the number of operations is increasing continuously. "We perform 2000 body contouring treatments a year, including liposuction, breast surgery, abdominoplasty, body lift and intimate surgery, and facial rejuvenation is around 8000," says spokeswoman Franziska Niedermeier. 20 years ago, the clinic started with five employees, after ten years there were 50 and currently there are around 80.
Twelve permanent doctors treat about 10 000 patients each year, most of them women. The average patient is "self-determined and wants a natural result". Most of them wanted to turn back time a bit or have a problem area treated that bothers them for a long time. This could be a malformed breast, a birthmark on the face, a wrinkled wrinkle or saddlebags, so Niedermeier.
This is worth a lot to the customers: depending on the zone, liposuction costs between € 5,300 and € 7,700, breast augmentation with implants costs around € 6,500, a breast lift € 7,300 and the Oberlidlifting € 2,350. The Internet portal Beauty Clinic.info has put together the most popular interventions in an evaluation of 25,000 users and a survey of surgeons. Breast augmentation ranks first among women, followed by liposuction, eyelid tightening, breast lift and nose correction.
Around 20 percent of patients are now men. They were particularly interested in liposuction, eyelid or tummy tuck. The continuing high demand for breast implants is also reflected in Polytech Health & Aesthetics GmbH in Dieburg, Germany's only manufacturer of silicone implants. With 230 employees, the company generated a turnover of 36 million euros in 2017. Only a few weeks ago, Polytech announced the acquisition of the former partner G & G Biotechnology Ltd. a start-up from Israel, which has developed a new technology for up to 30 percent lighter implants. For the current year Polytech expects 42 to 45 million sales.
Dr. Klaus Niermann in the Fontana Klinik Mainz (about 20 employees) has collected some good reviews on the internet portal Schönheitsklinik.info. He specializes in plastic surgery on the face, but also offers services such as breast surgery, liposuction or hair transplants. "We also see that demand is increasing overall," says Niermann.
A trend is currently the area of intimate surgery with labia correction or the reconstruction of the hymen. The latter is often desired by Muslim women. Also in the trend is genital whitening (whitening), which the clinic also offers. "Often we also have the classic mommy make-over with breast lift and liposuction," says Niermann. In the event that the breast and the body after two or three children are not what they used to be.
