A perfect smile with bright, straight teeth - everyone would like that. Many, however, shy away from a visit to the dentist for fear of injection and loss of tooth substance. The dentist can nowadays help without drilling and unpleasant grinding.
"To beautify teeth, crowns were done for a long time, which was associated with extreme grinding of often healthy teeth," explains Dr. med. med. dent. Johannes Edelmann, practicing dentist in Berlin and specialist for aesthetic dentistry. "For some years now, however, there has been something new that is becoming more and more prevalent in practice: the so-called veneers and lumineers."
Veneers are thin ceramic veneers that are applied to existing teeth. "In this minimally invasive procedure, considerably less tooth substance has to be sacrificed than previously. Just 20% of what had to be removed with crowns, namely only about 0.8 mm from the tooth must be ground here, "explains the expert.
Compared to the crowns a much gentler alternative. But an innovation from the US is now even more gentle. "Noninvasive Lumineers do not require sanding at all. One impression is enough and in a second session, the tooth-technically produced, 0.3 mm thick Lumineers can already be glued in place. Done is the perfect smile ", reports Dr. med. Johannes Edelmann from practice. For the use of the wafer-thin Lumineers, however, a few conditions must be met. "The easiest way is when the teeth are gaping and leave enough room for the bowls," says the expert. "In case of excessive crowding or a possible squeezing of the gums by the Lumineers, individual grinding may be necessary." However, 0.3 mm is sufficient for the use of the shells.
On the other hand, there are cases in which Lumineers are not the drug of choice. "If teeth are discolored or distorted, I would advise against Lumineers. If discolored, the wafer-thin Lumineer can not cover the dark color, because it is extremely transparent. And tooth squares need to be sharpened to correct them. "This is where the use of the 0.5 mm thicker veneer is made to make the teeth more aesthetic.
The conclusion of Dr. med. Johannes Edelmann: "Whether the patient is suitable for a Lumineer or a Veneer treatment is ultimately decided by the aesthetically trained dentist. But the better the patient knows about the possibilities, the more comprehensive he can get advice. "
