About Prof. MD C. Hagl

Christian Hagl was born in Munich as the son of a surgeon and grew up on Lake Starnberg. He completed his medical studies and doctorate at the University of Heidelberg. Professor Hagl is married and has three children.

Hagl began his clinical training in 1995 in cardiovascular surgery at the University Clinic in Kiel. Just one year later, in the wake of Professor Haverich, he moved to the Hannover Medical School (MHH), where he completed his further specialist training at one of the largest transplant centers in Europe. After returning from a 2-year research stay at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, he completed his habilitation at the MHH. In 2004 he became a senior physician, since January 2009 he was the chief senior physician at the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplant and Vascular Surgery at the MHH and was appointed adjunct professor in 2010.

From 2006-2008, as a board member of the German Society for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, he dedicated himself to the structured training of young surgeons. Prof. Hagl is a member of numerous scientific societies and commissions and works as a scientific reviewer on the editorial board of the "Journal for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery".

The new head of the clinic was able to attract a number of employees who will strengthen the successful team at LMU Cardiac Surgery in various specialist areas. With the new appointment, the entire spectrum of modern cardiac surgery - including so-called minimally invasive (less traumatic) procedures - will be continued and further developed. Prof. Hagl has clinical expertise and a nationally and internationally valued high scientific reputation in the treatment of diseases of the large body arteries (aorta). This includes the establishment of new surgical techniques and the protection of various organ systems during these often very complex interventions. Other focal points are reconstructive interventions on the heart valves, special techniques for complete arterial revascularization of the coronary arteries and the surgical treatment of terminal cardiac and pulmonary insufficiency. Prof. Hagl: "With the increasing life expectancy of our patients, modern medicine will always bring new challenges with it."

The Medicine of Future for You Today!

Welcome to Ludwig-Maximilians University Clinic in Munich – the University in the heart of Munich. LMU is recognized as one of Europe’s premier academic and research institutions. The Hospital of Munich University is located at the very core of Bavaria and is one of the biggest university clinics in Europe. The facility complex, consisting of two big campuses located in the city centre and Grosshadern district, offers high level medical expertise and innovative research.

In 2012 approximately 500,000 patients were treated as inpatients, outpatients, and daycases at the downtown and Grosshadern campuses of the Medical Center of the University of Munich. Its 45 specialist clinics, institutes, and divisions have more than 2,000 beds at their disposal. There are about 1,800 doctors from a total of nearly 10,000 employees. Research and teaching make it possible to provide the highest medical standard in patient care. Cardiology department/ Interdisciplinary heart center

Our heart surgery department, headed by an outstanding heart surgeon, offers diagnosis and treatment of heart problems, according to the latest state of medical knowledge.

The guiding principle of the house is to bring together the specialists from various branches for diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases on the interdisciplinary level, so that patients are optimally supplied. To achieve optimal results, we are working intensively with other departments both within and outside the university hospital. We attach great importance also to the cooperation with our colleagues in private practice, in order to secure the long-term therapeutic success for as many patients as possible.
