He is one of the best doctors in Germany, the head physician of the Parkinson Belitz-Heilstaetten clinic and on Sunday a runner at the Teltow half-marathon: Georg Ebersbach. In an interview, he talks about Parkinson's disease and the possibilities of effective therapy. Prof. Dr. med. Georg Ebersbach is the Chief Physician of the Neurological Hospital for the treatment of movement disorders and Parkinson's disease in Belitz-Heilstätten.

Mr. Ebersbach, how can you briefly describe Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases. The destruction of nerve cells leads to a gradual loss of movement. Despite the use of modern drugs and the stimulation of the deep brain, Parkinson's disease is not curable, which means for those who have suffered from a profound change in living conditions and future prospects.

How can sport help?

At all stages of the disease, the oncoming loss of physical activity can be counteracted by purposeful training of strength, endurance, safety, rhythm and speed. Many of the problems that arise in the long term, such as gait and imbalance, are not sensitive enough to medications and must be intensively treated through physical therapy and active training. Together with the insurance company AOK Nordost and with the support of the German Foundation for the Fight with Parkinson's Disease, the Parkinson Beelitz-Heilstätten Clinic is an active lead on the use and further development of exercises and new therapies against Parkinson's disease.

What does running mean to you?

Running or walking in a group is an excellent medicine that activates not only the body, but also the mind and soul. Therefore, victims of Parkinson's disease can fight this problem consciously, acting in a group as part of sports therapy directed against alienation, passivity and possible loneliness to which patients with Parkinson's diagnosis are prone.
