About Prof. MD A. Dietrich

The Department of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery at Leipzig University Hospital received the certification as a reference center for bariatric surgery in 2017. This confirms the special expertise and quality of treatment of the center.

The obesity or bariatric surgery at the Leipzig University Hospital is integrated into a broad network of doctors and therapists, which offers optimal advice and treatment for patients with obesity.

In close cooperation with the Integrated Research and Treatment Center (IFB) Obesity Diseases, both conservative (non-operative) and surgical treatment options for obesity are offered and scientifically supported by a multidisciplinary team of internists, surgeons, nutritional therapists and psychologists. If one patient has exhausted all possibilities of conservative treatment without sufficient success, gastroenterologists and surgeons at Leipzig University Hospital offer a wide range of endoscopic and surgical weight loss procedures.

The type of obesity surgery or metabolic intervention depends on the severity of obesity, accompanying comorbidities, eating behavior and other factors as well as the patient's desire.

The weight loss is possible because the surgery reduces the amount of food that can be consumed (restriction) and / or reduces the absorption of nutrients in the intestine. In particular, in the gastric bypass procedure it comes through the altered food passages to hormonal changes that positively affect the metabolism.

Obesity or bariatric surgery is a therapeutic option for patients who have not been able to achieve sufficient weight loss in conservative (non-surgical) treatment programs or who are offered prompt surgery as an alternative to the conservative program for certain reasons (primary indication or metabolic surgery). The Leipzig University Hospital is a certified reference center for bariatric surgery.

In close cooperation with the Integrated Research and Treatment Center (IFB) Obesity Diseases, both conservative (non-operative) and surgical treatment options for obesity are offered and implemented and scientifically supported by a multidisciplinary team of internists, surgeons, nutrition therapists and psychologists. If all options of conservative treatment have been exhausted with a patient without sufficient success, the gastroenterologists and surgeons at the Leipzig University Hospital offer a wide range of endoscopic and surgical procedures for weight loss.

For the treatment of obesity with surgical procedures, there is a medical guideline in Germany (AWMF guideline "Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases"), which was drawn up under the chairmanship of Prof. Dietrich.

If a patient has certain criteria that make bariatric surgery or metabolic surgery advisable, doctors speak of an indication for such an intervention. Reasons that speak against obesity surgery are called contraindications.

The type of obesity surgery or metabolic intervention depends on the severity of the obesity, existing comorbidities, eating behavior and other factors as well as the patient's wishes.

Weight loss is possible because the operation reduces the amount of food that can be consumed (restriction) and / or the absorption of nutrients in the intestine is reduced. Especially with the bypass procedure, the changed food passage leads to hormonal changes that have a positive effect on the metabolism.
