Elvira Schiprowski had a stomach reduction in Hanseatic hospital Helios in Stralsund. After this operation, she lost almost 70 kilos.
For Elvira Schiprowski, this surgery at Hanseatic hospital Helios in Stralsund was a fresh start.
She weighed 142 kilograms before the intervention. Today, nothing reminds her that she once had problems with her figure. But when she had all that excess weight, she suffered not only from physical discomfort, but also felt ashamed.
"Conservative treatment methods such as diets or nutritional advice did nothing," recalls Elvira Schiprowski. Her GP suggested her to think about an operation. Elvira Schiprowski contacted the surgeon, Dr. Christian Lau from Hanseatic hospital Helios in Stralsund. After many conversations with doctors, she finally decided on an operative procedure for stomach reduction. She has lost many kilos since then, weighing 75 kilograms today. However, the next problem revealed itself: the excess skin.
At this point, Christian Lau again came into play. The 40-year-old medical practitioner has became a real professional after completing his six-year additional training in plastic and aesthetic surgery. This makes him the only doctor in West Pomerania who has this special qualification. "Plastic surgery is based on four pillars," he explains. "These are hand and burn surgery, reconstruction and aesthetic surgery.“ With her excess skin, that appeared as the result of the large weight loss, Elvira Schiprowski turned again to the surgeon. She required three operations.
Three months ago the hospital established a new Department of plastic and aesthetic surgery. There is a demand. In 2017 alone, 32647 people in Germany underwent surgery for non-medical reasons, with this figure set to increase in future. "A person may want to change their appearance for different reasons," says Christian Lau. Whether it is the excess skin after massive weight loss, reconstruction due to a tumor or the flabby belly after pregnancy. "Feeling uncomfortable in your own body can be very stressful, both physically and mentally," says the physician. "Understanding, consulting, finding the appropriate surgical technique, as well as the aftercare are the central pillars of our treatment.“
Again and again, he points out that it would not work without many prior consultations and an extensive follow-up. The patient and the doctor need to get to know each other. "There must already be a basis of trust", the doctor is convinced. "How great is the patient's psychological stress and can I meet his expectations at all?“
On 19th September at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Hospital am Sund, the specialist Christian Lau will give the lecture "Lifting operations: plastic and aesthetic interventions on the face, chest and abdomen". Interested parties are cordially invited to this event.
