No other surgery is performed so often. In Germany, approximately 150,000 uterine operations are performed annually. Critical physicians warn that the uterus should not be hastily removed. It is important not only for having offspring, but also makes it possible for most women to feel like a woman.
Dr. Sebastian Reicke from the Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Gynaecological Clinic in the English Park in Munich says, “There is an extremely rare medical need to remove the uterus. It is required in case of cancer or if the woman has severe pain and bleeding that cannot be cured in other ways.”
The most common causes of the uterus removal (hysterectomy) are cancer, large fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding and uterine prolapse.
During an abdominal hysterectomy the organ is removed through an incision in the abdominal wall, and the vagina is sutured shut. This intervention is recommended in case of cancer, incomprehensible accretions or diseased ovaries which are also removed.
By using this method, as the name implies, the uterus is removed through the vagina. The end of the vagina is sutured shut. This surgery is more easily tolerated.
This minimally invasive intervention (surgery “through the keyhole”) is performed through three small incisions in the peritoneum. The uterus is cut into pieces in the body, and then removed through a narrow manipulation canal. The ovaries are preserved.
