For many people, the thought of visiting a dentist makes you feel uncomfortable. Some even suffer from such a pronounced dental fear that they do not even go to a practice or postpone the visit until it can not be otherwise. But then often have small holes already developed into large caries defects or teeth wobble due to advanced bone destruction and are beyond saving. Elaborate lengthy treatments with several individual appointments are the result - for anxiety patients, however, a huge problem. "Especially for these patients, a dental treatment under general anesthesia is suitable, especially if a comprehensive renovation is necessary," explains Dr. med. med. dent. Patrick Ilbag, co-owner of the Salierpraxis with locations in Düsseldorf and Kempen. The complete treatment then takes place quite relaxed, almost in the sleep. "Even severely involved patients benefit from this treatment option, as only a single session is required instead of many individual appointments," adds his colleague and partner Oliver Brux.
Although modern narcosis procedures today allow for an exact dosage of the drugs, which stress the body as little as possible and without lengthy after-effects, treatment under general anesthesia always represents a burden on the entire body. Therefore, this anesthetic procedure should always be well considered. Of particular importance in the decision is a detailed consultation with the anesthetist, who asks any pre-existing conditions and educates about risks. "It is important that an anesthesiologist is also present during the entire duration of the procedure, who constantly monitors the body functions and general condition of the patient," explains Dr. med. Patrick Ilbag. Especially with a complex supply of dental implants in many cases, the implantation under general anesthetic makes sense. This form of anesthesia is also suitable for interventions in the field of wisdom teeth, complicated measures for bone formation or preparatory treatment of the teeth for veneers, crowns, extensive fillings or root canal treatments. Interesting side effect: Anesthesia can also accelerate the healing process and complaints after treatment are lower than after local anesthesia.
"Today, many people are increasingly suffering from allergies and intolerances. In addition to the classical artificial tooth roots made of titanium, we therefore increasingly use metal-free implants, "says dentist Oliver Brux. This also applies to the components of dentures, such as alloys and denture materials. Dentures made of ceramic are characterized in these cases by special compatibility. From aesthetic point of view, metal-free dentures represent the most sophisticated solution, because the crowns look like real teeth in terms of color effect, translucency, etc., if they do not have metal components. In addition to all implant components, metal-free alternatives also exist for fillings, inlays, crowns, bridges or prostheses.
