There are organs that people think about only when the organ itself reminds of itself. One of these organs is the bladder, which, even in its normal state, can cause it to be done urgently. But there are diseases that affect the bladder, restrict its functions and, ultimately, can force the organ to be removed. The most common of such diseases is bladder cancer.
The number one risk factor for a malignant tumour in the bladder is smoking. Men who are in contact with certain components found in paints are more likely to suffer from bladder cancer. It also concerns hairdressers. Men are generally more susceptible to this type of cancer. If the tumour is only superficial, it can be removed without any bladder damage. However, then it is necessary to perform cystoscopy regularly to control it.
But if the tumour has already affected the muscles, it is necessary to remove the entire bladder. Last year in the department of urology at Maria Hilf Hospital this surgery was performed 42 times. After surgery the patient is provided with an artificial urethral catheter, for example, a bladder substitute is artificially formed from part of the intestine. “This method is used only in ten percent of patients,” explains Dr. Martin Zaum, head of the department of urology at Maria Hilf Hospital. “It involves training and medical support throughout life.” There is an option ‒ to divert urine into the colon or into the urinal. The latter method is the most common one.
