At Last Nothing Hurts. Freedom of Movement for the Shoulder

Twelve years ago Wilfried Richter had pain in his shoulder, which was accompanied by reduced mobility. Under advice of his attending physician in the city of Schwarzenberg, he decided to undergo surgery at the MediClin Waldkrankenhaus Bad Düben clinic. The surgery was successful.

“It was arthroscopic removal of calcium deposits from the left shoulder joint,” he recalls. “To this day I have no problems with this side.”

However, a year ago, similar symptoms occurred on the right side. “At first the pain was weak. My job as head of the construction equipment sales department took a lot of time, especially in the summer months, and a visit to the doctor was postponed,” explains the 62-year-old man. “However, in autumn the pain became unbearable, the mobility of the joint was becoming increasingly reduced.”

Dr. Peter Hrouzik, head physician of the MediClin Waldkrankenhaus Bad Düben clinic, knows about patients’ problems caused by shoulder pain, “There are often problems if you need to take something. Because of reduced mobility and severe pain, things located higher than a certain level, such as dishes in a kitchen cupboard, become difficult of access. The reasons may be different, for example, wear and damage to the site of attachment of the shoulder muscles, arthrosis, calcification, or intra-articular loose bodies.”

It was torture for Wilfried Richter to hold the steering wheel of the car. Guided by the positive experience of the previous treatment, he finally turned to specialists in Bad Düben again.

Detailed diagnostics based on medical examination, X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) made things clear. “Like it was twelve years ago, calcification and changes in the rotator cuff were the cause of the pain,” recalls Dr. Hrouzik. “Besides, the biceps tendon disease of the shoulder worsened the situation for Mr. Richter. Fortunately, by means of minimally invasive methods this disease could be cured without any problems.”

During subsequent consultations, Wilfried Richter discussed treatment options with the doctors of the clinic. “They explained in detail not only the diagnosis, but also the possibilities of treatment. As a result, we decided to perform arthroscopy.”

And then everything happened very quickly. On Friday, before lunch, arthroscopy was performed, and the first procedures to exercise the arm started on the day of the operation. “Everything went according to the plan, and the very next day they started performing physiotherapy,” recalls Richter. “On Monday I had great results. I was standing right in the bath and was shaving when the doctor came. He said that if I could shave a little higher, I could go home that day. So said, so done. Shortly after that I was discharged. It was wonderful!”

Then there were four weeks of outpatient physiotherapy at the place of his residence. “Now, almost nothing hurts me, there is definitely more mobility, and I can again take the dishes from the upper shelves of the kitchen cabinet,” rejoices Wilfried Richter. “It is very possible that my mobility will be restored by 100%. In the Waldkrankenhaus Bad Düben clinic all conditions for this are created. I thank the whole team for their help. They consulted me perfectly well and cured me.”
