According to the article published in the medical journal The Lancet, the first childbirth in the world occurred after uterus from a dead donor had been transplanted to a woman.
It was September 2016. The surgery was performed by Brazilian doctors. The donor died of subarachnoid hemorrhage. The 45-year-old woman had undergone vaginal delivery three times.
The recipient suffered from a congenital uterine defect (Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome). Prior to the transplantation, she had undergone an in vitro fertilization cycle (IVF) which resulted in the formation of eight blastocysts.
The recipient successfully recovered from surgery and was discharged from hospital eight days later. The first period was 37 days after the transplantation, and then menses became regular.
The woman became pregnant after the first transfer of one embryo. Seven months had passed after the transplantation. No abnormalities were detected in the woman or the fetal. There were no signs of rejection.
Delivery via cesarean section occurred on December 15, 2017. The mother was in her 36th week of pregnancy. The girl weighed at birth 2,550 g. A minute after the birth, she received nine points on the Apgar score, and ten minutes later - ten points. The baby developed normally.
During the labor the uterus was removed.
