Every year thousands of people choose to have a nose surgery

Too big, too crooked, too crooked - many people are especially critical when they look at their own nose in the mirror. Thousands of people go each year to opt for nose surgery and correct the nose shape.

There are few medical reasons. It's mostly about looks, attractiveness and self-esteem. "The nose as the central point of the face attracts everyone's attention. Therefore, it is only understandable that there is a desire for a correction in case of conspicuous nose shapes, "says Marta Obermeier, Specialist in Plastic Surgery in Bad Reichenhall. Men are in the minority, but by no means seldom found at the cosmetic surgeon. "For men, facial aesthetics have been playing an increasingly important role for years," she explains.

The motives for it can be different. According to Obermeier's experience, it is often about the partnership, the career or even just about your own self-esteem. "Today, as a man, you get along better with a well-groomed appearance, with less wrinkles, an alert look and a slim body," says the doctor. "I think men are just as important to looking good as women. It's just not that common to admit that."

Even face shapes with a narrow and straight nose are considered ideal, although the reality of life usually looks different. The list of medical names shows just how conspicuous the striking face bark can be: from the hump nose to the saddle, broad, tuber and balloon nose to the crooked noses, all the variations occur in the practice of aesthetic surgeons.

Correction of such nasal forms is, according to experts, one of the most common but also most demanding procedures. In the operating room, the patient's nasal bones and cartilage are treated under anesthesia with special chisels and files. The surgeon can, in many cases, operate through the nostrils to level bumps or straighten the nasal septum. This saves outer scars, as they arise in open surgery.

The side effects and possible complications are not to be underestimated. With several weeks of swelling and bruising all patients have to expect. One to two weeks, a bandage on the face is required.

As a rule, it is only possible to work after two to three weeks. Sport is taboo for at least six weeks. In addition, there is a risk that the intervention does not lead to the desired ideal result and permanent health problems remain on the sensitive organ.

Consumer advocates recommend being fully informed about the risks before an operation. Too optimistic descriptions and trivial phrases should be seen from the outset critical, advises Christoph Kranich, health expert of the consumer center Hamburg. In his experience, patients are not informed enough about potential dangers and side effects before undergoing cosmetic surgery. "For medically unnecessary surgery, the doctor must be particularly careful about all risks," he emphasizes.

Specialist Klaus Hebold from Cologne, a specialist in rhinoplasty, calls a whole series of risks and side effects: long-lasting sensory disturbances of the tip of the nose, secondary bleeding, dryness or excessive moisture in the nose. He expects that 10 to 15 percent of patients will have to be reoperated.
