About MD S. Weiner

The Clinic for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery was founded at the Northwest Hospital at the beginning of the year. The specialist discipline of bariatric surgery was previously embedded in the Clinic for General, Visceral and Minimally Invasive Surgery. With the establishment of the new clinic, the Northwest Hospital is expanding its expertise in general and visceral surgery, in particular in the operative and interventional treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases. The new head physician Dr. Sylvia Weiner.

The treatment of pathological obesity has a long tradition at the Northwest Hospital. The house has been offering conservative and surgical therapies for obesity for 25 years. Dr. Sylvia Weiner and her team treat more than 1,000 outpatients or inpatients every year. The Obesity Center at the Northwest Hospital was awarded the certificate “Competence Center for Obesity Surgery” in 2018 by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) and thus offers a particularly high quality of treatment and excellent expertise in this area.

Dr. Sylvia Weiner enjoys a very good reputation as an experienced specialist in bariatric and metabolic surgery. This is also confirmed by the FOCUS seal for her excellent treatment quality in bariatric surgery.

After studying at the University of Wurzburg, she began her training in minimally invasive surgery at the Sachsenhausen Hospital in Frankfurt, especially in bariatric surgery. In addition to the surgical treatment of obesity, the focus was on endoscopic procedures and the conservative treatment of obesity. Under the leadership of Prof. Rudolf Weiner, Sachsenhausen Hospital was long considered one of the first centers of expertise in the field of obesity therapy.

Accompanied by Prof. Neugebauer, MD Weiner was one of the first validated measuring instruments for assessing the quality of life after obesity surgery and received his doctorate on this topic at the University of Witten/Herdecke.

In addition to a large number of publications in the field of bariatric surgery, MD Weiner has regularly participated in national and international congresses on the subject for decades and is a welcome speaker there. Since 1999, she has regularly organized together with Prof. Weiner the Frankfurt meeting "Surgery in Obesity and Metabolic Disorders" in Frankfurt, which is one of the most prestigious congresses in the world. In 2018, MD Weiner for the first time as Congress President. In 2011 MD Weiner also organized the World Congress of the International Federation for Bariatric Surgery (IFSO) in Hamburg.

After extensive training in the field of minimally invasive surgery both in the hospital Sachsenhausen, and later in the Main-Taunus-Kliniken in Bad Soden, MD Weiner take over the management of the traditional Obesity Center in the Northwest Hospital. Under her leadership, the center, which had been established by Prof. Weiner 15 years earlier, experienced a renaissance.

Together with a meanwhile large team of surgeons and therapists, MD Weiner led the center within three years to the certification as center of competence for bariatric surgery by the DGAV. In addition to bariatric surgery, the center offers a wide range of minimally invasive upper abdominal surgery and hernia repair.

Memberships and research activities

Since 2003, Dr. med. med. Weiner a variety of research activities in the field of bariatric surgery. In addition to numerous specialist publications, articles were published in journals and books.

MD Weiner is a member of numerous national and international professional societies and, from 2015-2017, he led the Young IFSO working group of the World Association of Obesity Surgeons.

From 2013-2016, MD Weiner is also a board member of the National Working Group on Adiposity Therapy (CA-ADIP) of the DGAV (German Society for General and Visceral Surgery). Since 2014, MD Weiner the further education of the specialist co-ordinators for the obesity centers together with the DGAV and the BDC.

Furthermore, numerous reviews of international journals (Obesity Facts, Obesity Surgery) and more than 25 internationally recognized publications have been published.

As a further event, various continuing education courses have been regularly organized by MD Weiner: These include suture courses for surgeons, continuing education events for physicians in private practice, patient forums and for six years the organization of a continuing education event organized by the German Association of Surgeons (BDC) from the series Visceral Surgery Compact.

In addition to a variety of surgical conferences, MD Weiner regularly participates in surgical and endoscopic training courses.

In 1999 she was awarded the Poster Prize of the International Society (IFSO) and in 2014 she was awarded a scholarship for her scientific work.
