About Prof. MD A. Tuerler
Against the background of increasing obesity in Germany and the associated health problems, therapists specializing in the treatment of obesity in the Bonn / Rhein-Sieg region have joined together to form an interdisciplinary obesity center in order to offer optimal individual treatment concepts for those affected. In addition to the medical area, other specialists and specialists such as dietitians, psychologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists and sports coaches are involved in the treatment of obese patients.
The patient benefits from holistic care "from a single source". In addition, a lively exchange of information among those affected takes place in the self-help group Adipositaszentrum Bonn.
The Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Johanniter Hospital has for many years had a high level of expertise in the field of obesity surgery and has been certified since 2011 as a reference center for obesity and metabolic surgery. In Germany there are currently only 44 specialized centers with this certificate (as of 2016). For the certification, many criteria necessary for the success of the treatment have to be met, such as the surgeon's expertise, the infrastructure, the high quality of treatment, the follow-up, etc. The certificate is issued by the CAADIP (German Association for General Practice for Adiposity Therapy) - and Visceral Surgery) after regular audits with quality controls. The health insurances propose that bariatric surgery is preferably carried out at certified centers in order to achieve good treatment results.
