About Prof. MD N. Runkel

The Department of Obesity Surgery and Metabolic Surgery (operative and interventional treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases) with its affiliated Obesity Center covers the entire medical treatment spectrum of established obesity surgery and the interventional treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases.

With the obesity center at the Sana Klinikum Offenbach, Runkel takes over a department with a total of eight specialists, other assistant doctors, nutritionists and a well-coordinated care team. "We have known and valued each other for almost 15 years from our collaboration in the German Society for Surgery, the Society for Visceral Surgery and the German Obesity Society," comments Prof. Runkel. "Now I am looking forward to it, together with my colleague Weiner to work together. "

For the past 18 years, Prof. Runkel was director of the clinic for general and visceral surgery at the Villingen-Schwenningen Clinic, where, among other things, he successfully set up and managed a certified center for bariatric surgery. Runkel started his academic career with a degree in philosophy, but then quickly switched to medicine. Born in the Rhineland, he studied in Mainz and London, later did his doctorate in Bochum and completed his habilitation in 1994 at the University of Heidelberg on the subject of "The role of the intestine in the development of sepsis in acute pancreatitis". In 2007 the Medical University of Cluj (Klausenburg / Romania) awarded the doctor the honorary title of Dr. h.c. (honoris causa). Numerous stays abroad, further training courses, publications and functions in specialist societies impressively underpin the extensive competence of the new Offenbach head physician. “It is important to me to continue the good work of my predecessor. Here in Offenbach I can contribute to a well-coordinated team and look forward to interdisciplinary cooperation with the other specialist departments of the clinic as well as the resident doctors in the region and beyond, ”summarizes Runkel.

Prof. MD Runkel and his team occupy a leading position in the surgical treatment of obesity with more than 500 procedures each year. In addition, he has developed a network of cooperating facilities for the pre- and post-treatment of patients from all over Germany and more than 35 other countries.

The clinic in every respect at the highest level. Patients find everything for a speedy recovery at the newly renovated ward.
