About Prof. MD M. Heiss

Obesity has increased significantly in recent years worldwide and shows an increasing incidence (number of new cases). In Germany, every second citizen is now overweight, with often accompanying health, social and socio-ecological consequences.

Success in the treatment of morbid obesity (morbid obesity) can only be achieved with a comprehensive therapy concept. In particular, it has been shown in morbid obesity that a sole nutritional or drug therapy often causes no permanent weight loss. Often only by an operative measure a decisive turn in the weight reduction can be achieved.

The interdisciplinary therapy concept presents how the health and economic problem of obesity in the Center for Bariatric Surgery and Metabolic Surgery at the Cologne-Merheim Hospital is being approached in order to achieve a long-term and successful reduction of massive overweight and possibly existing diabetes mellitus.
