People whose kidneys do not work properly are temporarily or permanently treated using dialysis. Dialysis is a treatment method in which a machine is used to clean the blood of toxins that should otherwise be excreted through the kidneys. In order to be connected to a dialysis machine, each patient needs an access via which the blood can be brought into the machine and returned from it. A catheter or a so-called shunt is used for it. A dialysis shunt is an artificial joint between an artery and a vein on the arm, which is installed through a small surgical procedure.
Varicose veins are skin deep leg veins that have gotten visible due to the strong expansion or reinforced filling with blood. The disease often progress tortuously. It is caused by defective venous valves, which normally should prevent the blood from flowing in the wrong direction within the veins. Hereditary factors also often play an important role in the development of varicosis. Typical symptoms are, besides the visible varicose veins, heaviness of the legs, swelling or pain. The ulcer cruris ("open leg") is a dangerous sequel of untreated varicose veins, for example chronic wounds on the lower leg, which are lengthy and difficult to treat.
The chemotherapy which is an important part of the cancer treatment can often last for several weeks. Often the chemotherapointic drugs are introduced through a vein infusion. The veins get damaged with the aggressive medications. This is why it can be useful to implant a so called port during the chemotherapy course. This is done with the help of a surgical intervention in which a small chamber (port) is planted under the skin, usually in chest area. Medication and other infusions can then be given through the chamber (port) without problems and as oft as needed. And for the patient it means significan relief during the chemotherapy.
