About Prof. MD M. Birth
At the Department of General, Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery in the HELIOS Hanseklinikum Stralsund, we offer the complete spectrum of modern conventional surgical, minimally invasive and interventional surgery.
The department is a nationally well-recognized center for hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery as well as complex tumor surgery. Aside from the solely surgical treatment, we also offer a multitude of additional treatment modalities for the multimodal treatment of advanced or metastatic tumors of all organs which surpass the normal standards.
Our experience in hepatobiliary surgery reaches from complex tumor resections to laparoscopic hemihepatectomies to mesohepatectomies and multiple liver resections (“in situ split”), if necessary also replacement of the vessels infiltrated by tumors which otherwise would render the patient unsuitable for the procedure.
Furthermore, we can rely on vast experience in interventional treatment such as laparoscopic or CT-guided radiofrequency ablation, arterial chemoperfusion and chemoembolization or portal venous embolization for hypertrophy induction in order to treat primarily non-resectable tumors or to render them operable. For inoperable tumors or tumor situations in which conventional treatment is exhausted and common chemotherapy doesn’t take or isn’t tolerated, we can offer promising treatment approaches. Locoregional chemoperfusion (thoracic, abdominal, thoracoabdominal), if necessary with stopflow in the extremities, hyperthermia and hyperoxygenation by use of a life-support machine as well as perfusion / infusion with oncolytic viruses are available. For palliative treatment of peritoneal carcinosis, we offer intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC), either laparoscopic or in conjunction with a peritonectomy.Pulmonary metastases, even in larger numbers or recurring, can be removed via laser resection, preserving pulmonary tissue.
Due to the high frequency in which tumor surgeries, especially liver and pancreatic surgeries, are performed, we can rely on the vast experience of all involved specialties up to the intensive care.
Intraoperative: sonography, doppler sonography, fluoroscopy, angiography, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, neuromonitoring, histologic frozen section procedure
In addition to our clinical focus areas, we offer the complete conventional and minimally invasive spectrum of general, visceral, thoracic and vascular surgery:
