Specialized eye clinics in Germany are leading health care facilities in laser and refractive surgery in the whole word. Refractive eye surgery is a modern and innovative surgical technique that enables improving vision disorders.
The goal of all interventions is to focus the focal point of the optical system on the retina again, as is the case with the normal-sighted eye. Thus, it is possible to become largely independent of the visual aid and ideally be able to do without them altogether. Depending on the needs and anatomical conditions of the particular patient, various procedures are available.
Ophthalmic surgeries in Germany help patients to treat visual impairment and avoid vision loss. Due to the surgery patients don’t need eyeglasses or contact lenses anymore so they can increase their life quality.
German ophthalmic centers perform complicated refractive surgical procedures using modern technical equipment. All the specialists have a large professional experience and are highly qualified. This is what makes an effective treatment and cure of vision disorders even in very difficult situation possible.
Due to several innovative methods of refractive surgery the treatment results are always positive. It makes the quality level of the treatment much higher.
Refractive surgery methods
- LASIK (Laser-assisted Keratomileusis)
- Femto-LASIK (an advanced form of LASIK )
- LASEK ( Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy)
- PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy )
- IOL (Implantation of intraocular lens)
- PTK (Phototherapeutic keratectomy)
- Corneal collagen cross-linking (technique to straighten the eye’s clear surface)
Before any surgical procedure there should be performed eye examination by an ophthalmologist. Clinics in Germany use many diagnosis methods with and without medical equipment for it. Afterwards the surgeon decides about the surgical procedure in accordance to the medical history of the patient. The choice between different refractive surgery methods like LASIK or LASEK is crucial, as an effective treatment can remove a vision disease and improve the life of the patient.
Laser vision correction methods (LASIK, PRK, ReLEx®)
LASIK
A small change of refractive medium of human cornea effectively changes its entire optical system. The most popular method of vision correction in the world is the LASIK technique. It is performed in two stages. Firstly the finest cut (about 120 μm) is performed on the surface of the corneal flap (about 9 mm). A special microscopic cutting tools for laser eye correction, a femto-second laser allows to restore the refractive capacities of the cornea in 15 seconds. Thereafter, the surgeon proceeds to the second stage of the operation – he handles a deeper layer of corneal tissue using a special laser device. Through the use of the patient’s own tissue the healing process after eye surgery, as well as the restoration of vision is much faster.
ReLEx® minimally invasive laser vision correction
This innovative technique allows the laser vision correction using one particular femtosecond laser VisuMax®, produced by the German company Carl Zeiss. During the surgery the ophthalmologist removes part of the cornea through a small incision size of 2-3 mm. With this refractive eye surgery method there is no need to cut the corneal flap, which accelerates the healing. Since using the procedure ReLEx® smile cornea remains almost untouched, the procedure is ideal for people who cannot wear lenses and suffer from dry eyes. After the intervention the patient can leave the hospital in 1 or 2 hours.
There are more than 1 800 certified laser eye centers in Germany. Each of them is worth your attention.
ICL® – implantation of lenses?
The lens replacement is the most efficient refractive eye surgery. The principle here is the same as that of the contact lenses, with the only one difference: the implanted lenses cannot be easily removed. Preliminary examinations are similar to surveys conducted before the planned laser vision correction. Ophthalmic surgeon introduces an additional foldable lens in the eyeball through the two-millimeter incision at the edge of the cornea, placing the lenses behind the iris.
Characteristics of ICL implantation: ICL are the first biocompatible lenses that are made of the biocompatible material. They are so thin and flexible that can be introduced into the human eye through the cornea micro-tunnel. ICL works just like a normal contact lens. The only difference is that, being located inside the eye, it produces a vision correction once and for all, is invisible and does not cause any sensations. If necessary the lenses can be removed from an eye without disrupting its structure and anatomy. The vision is restored almost immediately after surgery.
