Our partners of plastic and aesthetic clinics offer the whole gamut of operations for breast plastics including reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction).
Sometimes women who would like to augment their breast don’t even know which difficulties and challenges ladies with big boobs face.
Huge breasts appeal to most men and cause envy in other women, but sometimes females owning them don’t share such joyful emotions. Excessive breast size can cause both medical and aesthetic problems. This is why modern plastic surgery offers a method called reduction mammoplastics, or, to put it simply, breast reduction.
Too big mammary glands are problematic not only from aesthetic standpoint – this is a danger to person’s health. Heaviness during walking, postural abnormalities, pain in back and intertrigo under mammary glands are the main problems of ladies with big boobs.
Breast reduction in German plastic surgery clinics helps to get rid of these problems and acquire firm mammary glands of optimal size. The size of breast is made according to patient’s demands and body proportions. You will get positive effect after operation – breast becomes younger, firmer and lifted.
Causes of breast reduction
Only specialists can define whether a woman has real reasons for reducing breast size, and how serious her problems are. A doctor will explain patients all details of the procedure, describe results, possible risks and give recommendations for post-surgical period.
Not all women with big breasts consider that a problem, and only serious issues with health can be the reason to consider breast reduction operation. Breasts weighing more than 0.5 kg load the spine considerably, which increases the risk of the following problems:
- Pain in thoracic spine and neck that spreads to shoulders;
- Mastalgia – pain in the area of breast;
- Problems breathing (because women usually have chest breathing pattern);
- Skin irritation, inflammation and intertrigo under mammary glands;
- Complicated diagnostics of mammary gland diseases;
- Restriction of physical activity.
With aging these problems becoming worse. Uneven load on the spine triggers the development of scoliosis and degenerative disc disease. The back and neck are loaded more, which causes migraine and pain in muscles.
Since the spine is closely connected with inner organs, that leads to overall degradation of health. Body posture and walking are affected, as well. In such cases, breast reduction surgery stays the only sensible solution for women who want to lead life without chronic pain and problems.
Contraindications to reduction mammoplastics
Breast reduction is made only for patients at the age of majority. After the operation, nipples and areas around them can lose sensitivity, because sometimes the integrity of mamillary ducts is destroyed.
After complicated surgical manipulations, some women cannot breastfeed, which is why this procedure is recommended after childbirth.
Breast reduction is not performed in the following cases:
- Diabetes;
- Poor blood clotting;
- Tumor diseases;
- Sexually transmitted diseases;
- Somatic diseases;
- 12 months haven’t passed after lactation yet.
Breast reduction does not provoke appearance and development of cancerous cells, which is why oncologic diseases do not occur after amputation.

Breast reduction operation
Breast reduction is done in three stages: mammary gland reduction, skin lifting and moving of nipple. Depending on patient's initial state, the following techniques can be used for breast reduction:
- Plastics of mammary gland with a T-cut;
- Plastics of mammary gland with a vertical cut;
- Plastics of mammary gland with a periareolary cut;
- Plastics of mammary gland with liposuction;
- Plastics of mammary gland with inner fixation.
Breast reduction with a T-cut
Plastic of mammary gland with a T-cut is the most widespread method for breast reduction. To cut mammary tissue, an incision is made around nipple areola, then skin is cut vertically down to the underbust fold.
This technique allows removing pretty considerable volumes of mammary gland and cut a big skin area. As the result, a woman gets reduced, firm breast without need of inner fixation. In German plastic surgery clinics, breast reduction with T-cut is performed with the newest spare methods, so you get hardly noticeable scars.
Plastics of mammary gland with a vertical cut
Breast reduction with a vertical cut causes smaller scars in comparison with the above mentioned procedure. In this case, no incision is made in the underbust fold. However, a vertical cut is stitched with a purse-string suture: small creases are formed on breast after the surgery, but they gradually disappear during skin contraction. The main advantage of this operation is that there’s no need to move nipples, but such approach is not recommended for cutting big amount of tissue.
Breast reduction with a periareolary cut
Breast reduction with a periareolary cut (around the nipple) is performed to cut a minor amount of mammary gland tissue. This kind of operation is typically used when one mammary gland is reduced to correct asymmetry.
Breast reduction with liposuction
Plastic of mammary glands with liposuction is performed when the skin is firm enough, and no lifting is required. This technique is often used in young women and allows reducing breast insignificantly. Breast reduction with liposuction is less stressful for patient’s body than reduction mammoplasty.
German plastic surgery clinics use the newest liposuction techniques that leave unnoticeable scars. Besides, breast reduction can be performed together with lipofilling of other body areas.
Breast reduction with inner fixation
Interior fixation for reduction mammoplasty is made to increase breast stability and improve lifting effect. Besides, inner fixation allows removing load from the suture which boosts regeneration.
What happens during the operation?
- Adipose tissue is removed partially;
- If necessary, some part of glandular tissue is removed;
- Skin excess is cut out;
- Nipple-alveolar complex is augmented and corrected.
The simplest operation that allows reducing breasts is liposuction, e.g. removal of excessive adipose tissue. However, the liposuction by itself destroys contours and makes mammary glands sag.
This effect is familiar to many women who lost pounds quickly. This is why removal of excessive fat in breast should be combined with lifting. The methods used during breast reduction surgeries are pretty complicated and require a high level of skills and experience.
Even if only adipose tissue is removed, mamillary ducts are also slightly affected, so a surgeon should do everything possible to preserve sensitivity of breast skin and make scars hardly noticeable. Besides, another crucial aspect for operation is formation of areola that’s also often should be corrected and reduced.
Nipple-areola complex is moved to a new position upper than the previous one. For this purpose, a doctor cuts out skin-adipose flap with blood supply preserved. The choice of area for donor skin flap is individual, and this question is solved during operation.
When forming a new area, a surgeon should consider the following:
- balanced flap size;
- presence of arterial and venous vessels in it;
- absence of bending and torsions;
- absence of pressure on the flap after installation and stitching of wound.
For the operation to be successful and its outcomes to be positive, the doctor you work with should know the anatomy of mammary glands perfectly and have a lot of practice in this field.
Moving of nipple for breast reduction
During surgery on mammary glands, nipple is moved due to areola transplantation. If a nipple can be fixed in normal position, it doesn’t have to be moved.
The Results
Final results can be evaluated within 6-8 months after operation.
Post-surgical period after breast reduction is usually easier for young women, because their mammary glands are more solid and elastic, and the volume of resection is usually lower than for older women, and the amount of adipose tissue is more than the amount of glandular tissue.
The results of operation are long-lasting. As for long-term results, most women agree that they are perfect, or satisfactory. It should be noted that all women are prone to natural aging even when such operation was done. Anyway, breast with operation will look more aesthetic and attractive than without corrective operation.
Recovery periods after breast reduction
During the first time after the operation, breasts is not attractive from aesthetic standpoint, but it’s temporary. It takes time for breasts to acquire normal shape. Gradually the scars get even and less noticeable, and breasts look better.
2-3 days after the operation should be spent in a clinic. After 2-3 days, bandage is taken off, and a woman needs to wear compression garments. The next day, a woman can go home.
The next 1-1.5 months there will be some restrictions – everything depends on restorative processes in body.
On 7-10 day, a woman should be consulted by the doctor who performed the operation. Outer stitches are removed the same day. Full maturation of scars can take about half a year. If stitches are made professionally and accurately, they can be almost unnoticeable.
During 1-1,5 months after reduction mammoplastics, patients should not perform physical exercises and experience physical load. During this time, wounds heal and tissues adapt to their new position. If woman’s work is not connected with physical load, she can start it within 2-3 weeks.
During the whole period with restrictions, a woman should wear compression garments. This is a very important rule that should be strictly followed. Otherwise, doctor’s work will be done in vain.
Are complications after reduction surgery possible? In most cases, when the operation is performed by a professional, it passes without negative outcomes and side effects. If a surgeon did his work incorrectly, unattractive scars can stay on the place of stitches.
When the operation presupposes removal of a large amount of tissues, in 1-3% cases women experience partial or full loss of sensitivity of nipple tissues. General surgical complications (bleeding, purulent processes) happen in less than 1% of patients. They can be conditioned by individual reactions or ignorance of recommendations during post-surgical period.
The process of scar regeneration after breast reduction lasts several months. To make scars soft and hardly noticeable, direct sunlight should be avoided. In German plastic surgery clinics, you will be recommended products that boost regeneration.
