Intrauterine insemination is the simplest, but effective assisted reproductive technique (ART). It has already helped thousands of patients to become parents. The word combination is self-explanatory. During procedure sperm is introduced into the uterus to achieve natural pregnancy. IUI is especially recommended in case of problematic semen analysis or ejaculatory-sexual disorders. Success rates of IUI at German fertility centers make up about 25%-35%. This percentage is higher than in other EU countries. This method is preferable for many international patients, since it is softer and more money-saving. Fertility centers in Germany constantly improve therapy methods and the quality of lab tests, as it plays important role in therapy results.
Indications for IUI
Infertility can be caused by both male and female factor. The IUI is performed at the European fertility centers if one of the following factors impedes the pregnancy:
- Low sperm count in semen analysis
- ejaculatory-sexual disorders
- low sperm motility
- immunologic incompatibility
- surgery on the cervix
- unexplained childlessness
- an incorrect uterus position.
Prior to treatment decision special tests are performed to decide, if you are a candidate for assisted reproductive techniques. In some cases a minimally invasive intervention can eliminate the problem and help the couple to avoid overtreatment.

Many couples want to know, how to prepare for IUI. If you plan such a treatment, withdraw from alcohol, take special herbs and follow a fat-low diet in order to enhance sperm characteristics. IUI: step by step
A male patient brings the sample of semen on the day of the procedure. The semen is specially prepared at the andrology lab, following the proper measures, so that the sperm with the best mobility are selected for implantation. Regularly scheduled ultrasound helps to find the most appropriate moment for IUI. The process is finalized with the introducing the vital sperm into the woman’s womb or tubes with a flexible catheter. The IUI injection has almost no side effects.
It is painless, so you won’t need any sedation or anesthesia. The implantation should occur right after IUI. The fertility specialist will comprehensively consult you on, what to do after IUI and will answer your questions.
How much does IUI cost?
Such treatment is much cheaper than in-vitro fertilization and costs about 2 000-2 500 euro (incl. the basic f tests, hormonal stimulation and sperm preparing). Please note that medical insurance in most cases covers IUI costs of the EU patients. If you need more details about prices or organizational matters, please call us or send an E-mail.
The improved TuboPeritoneal technique for higher pregnancy chances
Intrauterine TuboPeritoneal technique is a new and easy step to pregnancy. It is performed with special clamp device, which introduces 10 ml (instead of 1 ml) spermatozoa and seals cervix to prevent semen leak. Due to higher pregnancy rate (up to 30%), this method is widely implemented at the German, Swiss and Austrian fertility centers. It requires less hormonal stimulation and is more sof and effective than the traditional treatment. This procedure is a bit more expensive than IUI and costs about 3500 euro.
Why to stimulate ovaries?
This question is frequently asked before making a decision. The procedure can be performed during the female’s natural cycle or after hormone support of the ovaries. Many women prefer doing IUI without hormone treatment to avoid the hazard hormonal disorders. Women, who don’t have any problems with ovulation, can undergo therapy in their natural cycle. Hormone therapy helps, however, to increase the number of eggs, which can be later fertilized. In many cases such a preparation phase can double or even triple the success rates.
German centers apply soft medications, which help to increase fertility and have almost no adverse effects. Stimulation of ovaries is performed on second day of cycle under ultrasonic control. The repeated stimulation treatment takes place on the 8th day of cycle. When the follicles reach their optimal size, a special injection with HCG (Humanes Chorion-Gonadotropin) is made to trigger ovulation. Whether or not the hormone stimulation is necessary, is determined during the diagnostic tests.
Egg freezing prior insemination
Now it is possible to store eggs in pronucleus stage and to use them for further artificial IUI. It means that the egg was fertilized, but male and female gametes have not merged yet, so the genetic information hasn’t been combined. If the pregnancy didn’t occur in the stimulated menstrual cycle and you have to make one more reproductive procedure, there is no need to apply to hormonal stimulation again, since the doctors can use frozen cells.
If insemination didn’t help…
The German specialists insist that the IUI should be performed at least three times during the natural cycle. It is important to realize that IUI is just one of numerous available methods. If the expected pregnancy didn’t come, it means that it is time to try other modern techniques (i.e. IVF or ICSI). German fertility centers offer the full range of the newest methods for effective therapy (success rate up to 55%).
