TOP Doctors for Hallux Valgus

This deformity of the forefoot is the most common foot disease. The big toe deviates increasingly from its straight position towards the outside. So the toe is away from the middle of the body. The foot is significantly wider by the spread of the first metatarsal and you can see on its inside a more or less large bulge on the big toe base joint. This spread, in conjunction with the pull of the tendons, is the main cause of the formation of the hallux valgus.

Mostly the deformity does not cause any pain at the beginning, only shoe pressure problems in tight or hard shoes. Later, when the metatarsophalangeal joint additionally has a wear component or if bursitis sets over the "overbone", stress and rest pain can also occur. The formation of hallux valgus is also intensified by poor (pointed) footwear, high heels, overloading, tissue weakness, hormonal and other factors. It usually affects female patients and has a strong genetic (ie hereditary) component.

Correction using hallux valgus surgery

The correction of hallux valgus should take place sooner rather than later, as milder forms with well-preserved joints can be better and more permanently corrected than late stages.

The medical literature knows more than 150 different methods for correcting this malposition and it necessarily follows that none of the methods can be used for all forms of deformity. Some of the methods have proven to be "gold standard" (especially in combination with others), with a good surgeon handling 5 to 6 surgical procedures very well.

The operations are predominantly carried out minimally invasive and percutaneously, so in keyhole technique: We use the advantages of micro cuts of a few millimeters and do not waive the known advantages of the most modern surgical technique, so much more correction options, secure fixation by plates in the Bone hearts instead of the less secure single-screw technique or even the unfixed bone cuts.

There remains therefore the immediate load capacity and the absence of protruding drill wires despite the mini-invasive millimeter cuts. Thus, the new surgery technique in the case of Hallux valgus ideally satisfies the desire for aesthetic and functional foot correction without large scars.

Hallux valgus: What is the solution?

12.11.2019

Hallux valgus. Diagnosis is one of the most common problems that can be solved by foot surgeons.

There are patients with hallux valgus, but they have no complaints and need no therapy. In contrast, the patients with complaints actually have only one effective option, namely the surgery.

The signs of hallux valgus treatment are pretty easy for you to recognize: the feeling that the feet are getting wider and the shoes are getting tighter and tighter, big toe more and more to the side, the skin rubbing the bale more often.

The foot surgeon chooses the surgical method according to the stage in which the hallux valgus is in the patient and how far he has progressed.

The parameters include, for example, the size of the hallux valgus angle, the nature of the big toe joint, and the distance between the metatarsals.

There are two main cases of hallux valgus treatment: Hallux valgus treatment at early stage - "minor" surgery required and hallux valgus treatment at late stage - "larger" surgery required.

The smaller hallux valgus involves a correction of 1-2 bones, usually with joint preservation of the big toe. In most cases fine, remaining in the bone wires (later removal is not provided) to secure the operating result.

For example, in the larger procedures for correcting hallux valgus, a specific joint is usually stiffened by inserting a plate and several screws in the tarsal area (so-called Lapidus OP).

In the final stage, the hallux valgus often even leads to destruction or wear of the great toe joint. This leaves the foot surgeon with only one option for hallux valgus treatment: a stiffening operation.

Although it is a minor surgical procedure, there is always the likelihood of risks and complications.

But you do not have to worry too much - the effectiveness and tolerability of Hallux valgus treatment have been tested and proven, and every last step of the surgery has been determined. That's why the complications are very rare.

Of course, it is recommended that you do not wait too long to get the hallux valgus treatment. Consult your foot surgeon to find out which treatment would be best for you.

Do not be afraid of Hallux valgus!

25.10.2019

This fear is now largely unfounded, because: modern foot surgery has very gentle and safe surgical methods, which finally allows the patient a pain-free walk.

Even in the rare case of a failed hallux valgus surgery, one should know the following: There is almost no surgical complication, which can not be eliminated in exceptional cases with another (follow-up) surgery.

The advanced surgical techniques allow the patient immediate load after surgery in the special shoe in most procedures, unlike a few years ago when gypsum treatment with crutches was required.

The earlier opinion, one should perform a hallux valgus surgery as late as possible, is now obsolete. On the contrary, modern foot surgery even recommends early surgical treatment for the first symptoms, in order to prevent joint wear on the big toe, which is the result of waiting too long.

In the early stages of a hallux valgus, joint-preserving surgery is still possible, whereas in the presence of joint wear and tear, the surgeon has no choice but to recommend joint stiffening to the patient.

If you are unsure, it is advisable, at least for the first symptoms, to consult a specialist for the hallux valgus surgery and seek advice.

The advice does not hurt, and you then know what you are. And this regardless of whether one ultimately decides to surgery or not. So do not be afraid of hallux valgus!
