Dental veneers

Natural beauty and Hollywood-style smile are main goals of esthetic dentistry, and today achieving great results in this field is not something out of the ordinary: modern clinics and experienced dentists possess everything they need to eliminate both inborn and acquired denture defects. Chips, worn spots, unpleasant enamel colour – to eliminate all these troubles and create right shapes, veneers are used in modern esthetic dentistry.

It is possible to correct an unappealing smile with the help of veneers, which are placed on the teeth, returning them their beautiful appearance. To eliminate gaps between teeth, dentists also recommend veneers.

Our professionals advise to use only ceramic or plastic materials. This is mainly due to the properties of these materials, as well as their biocompatibility and durability.

Veneers are thin shells of different shapes. These include:

  • Plates on the front teeth,
  • Plates on the premolar teeth,
  • Partial veneers that are used to correct chips,
  • Veneers used to improve the alignment of the front teeth,
  • Occlusal veneers (Tabletops) on the side teeth,
  • Plates requiring only a minimally invasive intervention,
  • Non-Prep veneers (not requiring intervention).

In most cases, partial ceramic veneers are installed. There is no clear distinction between different types of veneers, this is why such terms as 360° veneers and ¾ dental crowns exist.

The English term "veneer" means façade. In particular, both dentists and patients associate the term veneer with the classic restoration of front teeth. Synonyms: Coating, ceramic plate. Veneers are not always made of ceramics. Unusual composite veneers are also technically possible. Direct composite restorations are not to be mistaken with veneers.

Veneers are very thin ceramic relief plates. Their width depends on the individual shape of the patient's teeth, and the thickness can vary between 0.3 and 1.2 mm. Ceramic plates less than 0.3 mm thick are hardly safe in handling, both in the laboratory and in use.

The preparation time is rarely directly related to the thickness of veneers. If no change of the shape or positional corrections is required, the dental technicians will quickly customise the veneers to get the desired shape.

The aim of the ideal preparation when performing the correction of the veneer is to achieve its even thickness. This means that, in the best case, no special preparation is required. But sometimes the minimum thickness of the veneer requires polishing of the tooth enamel.

Therefore, precise assessment of the situation based on all the requirements is needed in each case. You should always consider whether it would be easy to perform further additive modeling. This also applies to the tooth length and the possible reduction of its cutting edge.

Veneers are mainly used for aesthetic purposes to solve visual dental problems and in case of dispositions. They mask optical defects and any signs of wear, especially in the frontal teeth area. Veneers compensate the difference in size and shape of the teeth and thus create an aesthetically pleasing dental arcade. If the unwanted shade of teeth cannot be removed by bleaching, veneers are the most suitable option of its correction. Thin ceramic shells also cover large gaps between the teeth ("diastema") and chipped teeth. Fragile, curved, extremely short or very narrow teeth can be covered using special cladding technique.

With the help of veneers it is also possible to mask the deformation and structural anomalies of teeth, as well as violations of their structure (dysplasia). Veneers also cover damaged tooth enamel with sites of fluorosis or which was exposed to the tetracycline antibiotics, as well as in the increased consumption of fruit juice.

Jaw diseases such as bruxism affect the stability of veneers. Patients with such diseases of the dental system are recommended to resort to alternative methods. If the teeth are strongly chipped, veneers cannot be installed, and also we do not recommend to install veneers on teeth with old large seals.

In cases like this only a dental crown can provide the necessary external support. Patients with large areas of caries or with "jagged" teeth edges are recommended to use other methods of smile correction. For the successful aesthetic dental treatment you need to strictly follow the rules of oral hygiene.

Talk to your dentist about all your individual (color) wishes. After the preliminary fitting and preparation of veneers, the dentist conducts professional dental cleaning to be able to tightly fix the veneers.

The dentist also takes an X-ray to make sure that the teeth are healthy inside. If the teeth have lost their healthy shade, the color of the veneer must first be compared to the adjacent teeth to obtain the appropriate color palette of the teeth.

About 2 weeks later, ceramic veneers produced in a laboratory are attached to the outer surface of the teeth with a special plastic cement. Before that our experts pick up an adequate color and form of the ceramic plate. Prior to the installation the veneer is cleaned with water vapor, its internal surface is treated with acid, then washed with water and covered with a special cement.

Special braces are put on teeth ensuring that no saliva gets on the treated area during the procedure. The teeth are treated with phosphoric acid for a few seconds and then washed with water. The outer surface of the tooth is also covered with a thin layer of cement after the cleaning.

Adjacent teeth are protected from the contact with composite cement by a thin strip. The cement hardens only under the light of a special lamp, that is why the veneer can be set very precisely.

Usually veneers are glued one by one. First of all, residues of the composite cement should be removed from the gaps between adjacent teeth, in order not to allow the veneers to get glued together and cause tension. The veneers are cleaned and then polished. Finally, it is checked whether the patient can easily squeeze the upper and lower jaw and whether they feel any tightness.

The installation of veneers takes approximately 30 minutes. 1-2 weeks later the dentist checks the final result.

In order to securely fix the veneers, a small amount of tooth enamel has to be removed. Although it is completely safe, your teeth should be regularly inspected.

If after a few years your veneers have lost their original appearance, they can be replaced at any time.

The most innovative type of veneers are the ones that are glued to a slightly rough tooth surface. This method is called "no-prep method", as there is no need to heavily grind the teeth. A slightly rough tooth enamel is enough for the installation of a veneer.

However, this is not a long-term method of teeth restoration and does not fit all patients.

Overlay veneers are divided by the way they are manufactured and the materials used, as well as by the way they are installed. It is impossible to say which veneers are better. The price, service life, difficulty of installation, or maintenance: the choice is individual.

Classification of veneers by material

Ceramic veneers are made of medical porcelain, or ceramics with high transparency. To install such a unit, the surface of the tooth must be grinded. The plate is only about 0.5 mm thick (to compare and understand the values: the thickness of a good contact lens is 0.8 mm).

The peculiarities of ceramic veneer fixation make them an effective tool not only for changing the teeth color and protecting them against the subsequent damage, but also for changing their shape and correction of gaps between them.

The ceramic veneers are expensive, and the feedback about them can vary depending on how well they were installed. It is important to know that the process of ceramic veneer installation cannot be reversed and errors in their installation are unacceptable.

The success and the future of the patient's dazzling smile depends largely on the teeth health (it is important to ensure they are healthy before the operation), the quality of the installation, doctor's qualification and the materials applied.

We advise you to choose the proven products from European manufacturers: Procera, Lava Filtek, Supreme, Gradia, Zirconzahn, Ceramage.

IPS Empress veneers (leucite glass-ceramic, also known as metal-free ceramics) are similar to the ceramic veneers, but due to a number of features can be allocated in a separate group. They are developed by IPS Empress, specializing in the production of high-tech materials and pastry dyes. The key advantage of the inserts by the IPS Empress company: there is no need to prepare the teeth. The main drawbacks are the cost and the need for regular maintenance of the material.

Lumineers, also called Hollywood veneers, are made of ultra thin ceramics with a thickness not exceeding 0.3 mm (in German clinics ultra thin Hollywood veneers with the thickness of 0.2 mm are installed). Lumineers do not change color over time and are easily removed if necessary. It is important to know that despite their small thickness, the Lumineers are extremely resilient, and their visible fragility is only an illusion.

Key advantages of Lumineers: the tooth enamel does not need to be removed, the procedure is fast (in Germany the installation process of Hollywood veneers is split into two sessions), painlessness procedure (not requiring anesthesia), no adaptive period: Lumineers are invisible on teeth (they cannot be seen even on the well-illuminated front teeth), the highest quality and safety of modern materials for the Lumineers.

It is possible to hide color defects, chips and deformations, abrasions and displacements of teeth, wedge-shaped defects, enamel fluorosis and other visible troubles using aesthetic Hollywood veneers. It is an effective and reliable way of teeth alignment, the only drawback being the price of the materials. But this drawback can be compensated by high service life of Lumineers: up to 15 years.

Zirconium veneers are rightfully considered to have the best quality among their class. Their use can guarantee the smile that will not tarnish, safety and full biocompatibility. Zirconium dioxide is safe and durable, but is difficult to process, which significantly affect the installation price of the dental veneers: creation of a three-dimensional model of a tooth, processing of zirconium on a milling machine, grinding of tooth enamel and the subsequent jeweller work: all of this is a complex and technological process.

Advantages of zirconium veneers: teeth look naturally in any light, drinks and tobacco do not stain zirconium, the material is anallergic, zirconium dioxide has the highest durability despite its low weight, temperature differences do not influence the material. It is important to know that their installation requires the use expensive equipment, and any error will cause the plate breakage and mechanical trauma to the mouth cavity.

A good German clinic with highly qualified doctors and positive feedback from its patients can be a good guarantee of a successful operation.

Composite veneers are made of the same moldable materials used for dental filling. They are formed inside the patient's mouth cavity (as opposed to all the mentioned above methods).

Composite veneers do not require teeth preparation and can be installed in one visit to the dentist. Unlike ceramic veneers, and other types of overlays, the composite veneers are less damage resistant, they can hardly conceal serious defects, and the material has an average light-resistance.

Classification of dental veneers by the installation method

Types of veneers can also be divided by the way they are installed. Direct veneers are installed and formed in the mouth of the patient, while indirect are made separately in laboratory conditions. The direct (therapeutic) way of veneer manufacturing is used when composite veneers are installed. For different kinds of ceramic or zirconia veneers the indirect (laboratory) way of their installation is used.

If you still have doubts about veneers, you can try to wear sample ceramic plates. Already on the first exploitation day of the wear you will feel the difference. You will see that your teeth are not the same as before. Everything will change: your articulation, smile and even the way you eat. Anyone who agrees to test the veneers before installing the final version, later avoids any unwanted surprises. Dentists also refer to samples of veneers, as to the test models, when choosing their final shape. The term comes from the English language and stands for the façade. However, test veneers are fully functional at least for some time. You can eat normal food and speak without worrying about the ceramic (or trial plastic) plates on the teeth. But they cannot bear high mechanical loads. We are sure that if you try to wear trial veneers for a few days, you will not be able to live without them. Sample plastic veneers are made by a dental technician and are based on wax casts of your teeth. The latter are made individually in the dentist's office. The technician then adjusts their shape using the model at hand, and then fully adapts the plastic veneers to the size. Step by step individually produced veneers are created, their color and shape can be optimized at any time during the "trial period".

During the installation of the trial veneer the tooth remains untouched. But if the front teeth are to be supplied with long-term ceramic veneers, they must be pre-treated. Depending on the situation, the front surface of the teeth is sanded so that the veneers could have sufficient support. This is done very carefully. With the help of X-ray image the dentist will assesses the condition of the teeth, that would be covered with ceramic plates. These teeth should be completely healthy, otherwise the installation of veneers is impossible.

Ceramic veneers are the final option for the teeth restoration. By the way, the same applies to unfastened veneers. They differ from the classical veneers in that the teeth are not yet prepared (sanding is not performed). If it is not possible to grind the right amount of tooth enamel, the dentist chooses thinner veneers so that the tooth does not look too large.

Trial veneers allow you to see the preview of the desired result and test it in everyday life. They provide information on existing types of veneers in terms of their color, shape and appearance. What is already fixed or precisely adjusted on the test veneers is ultimately used during the installation of permanent veneers, making their service more reliable.

If veneers are not damaged and chipped, they can serve from ten to fifteen years. But "long-term" service does not mean it is "eternal". At some point even the strongest of the veneers should be replaced.

If a veneer fell out, is broken or if you noticed a crack in it, you must first contact your dentist and agree on a reception time. If possible, contact the dentist who installed your veneers and remembers the features of your teeth.

There are several reasons why veneers crack or fall out. In order for veneers to serve long, the dentist should carefully perform his work without neglecting even the most minor manipulations. The intensive preparation is the key to durability of quality ceramic veneers. If the veneer falls out even after a scrupulous preparation, it may happen because the dentist had not glued it correctly or the tooth was under strong pressure or damaged. It is possible that the tooth itself is damaged, and maybe the veneer has served its lifetime.

Any injury can also lead to the detachment of the veneer from the tooth surface, for example, if you have accidentally bitten a metal or glass object. A stiff toothbrush or excessive acidity of toothpaste can also shorten the lifespan of your veneers. Therefore, we recommend choosing a soft toothbrush and a pH-neutral toothpaste.

Try not to lose the pieces of chipped veneer or the whole plate. The dentist may be able to glue the veneer back to the tooth if it is not damaged. Thus saving the patient's finances. If the integrity of the veneer cannot be restored or it is impossible to glue it back, a new one must be installed. The dentist can also recommend another method of color and shape restoration of the tooth.

There are two ways to perform the procedure:

1. One-step procedure:

The dentist removes the old veneers with the help of a digital scan (Cerec 3d) under local anesthesia. If the patient suffers from dental phobia, they are offered a short-term nitrous oxide anesthesia.

During the installation of veneers the dentist creates the ideal shape of the veneers. After the fitting of a veneer and approval of the patient, the tooth enamel is grinded and the dentist fixes the veneer on the tooth.

When the individual color of the tooth and the shape of the veneer are selected, it takes only 15 minutes to adjust the veneer to the tooth on the milling machine. The next step is to fit and adjust the veneer again.

If the patient feels uncomfortable, the dentist immediately changes the shape and color of the veneer.

Cement fixation. This is one of the most important steps! The ceramic plate is firmly glued to the tooth enamel after the preliminary grinding. Only this procedure guarantees stability and long-term success.

2. Two-step procedure

When the old veneer is removed, the dentist installs a temporary replacement before fixing a new veneer.

The tooth is temporary covered with a plastic plate, while the dental technician creates an individual veneer which the patient will try in 14 days. If everything is in order, the veneer is glued to the tooth enamel.

To avoid the fall out of veneers, you need to seek help only from a professional dentist, and not to neglect preventive examinations. Your dentist will carefully check the condition of your teeth and the fixation of the veneers. The patient will enjoy their veneers and beautiful smile for a long period of time with the proper care, good quality of ceramics and its professional use on a pre-treated tooth.

Non-Prep veneers or veneers that do not require preparation (also known as Prepless veneers or Additionals veneers) are a proven method of teeth recovery used in the United States and gaining popularity in the field of aesthetic dentistry in Europe.

Most people who seek dentist help know perfectly well what it means to have a wide slit between the incisors, which causes discomfort: articulation disorders, food compaction, inflammation of the gums. Due to a bad tooth alignment, the pressure on the front teeth increases and they quickly abrade, the chewing surface gets worn out, chips and cracks appear. It is possible to solve all these problems thanks to veneers that do not require preparation. The dentist can install them immediately on the day of the visit.

The benefits of this new treatment method speak for themselves: the installation of the ceramic material is painless and does not require the grinding of a healthy tooth or changing its shape. With the help of Non-Prep veneers it is possible to hide all teeth defects, sparing them from further negative influence of external factors.

With Non-Prep veneers it is possible to mask not only the diastema, but also the chipped corners, cracks, and gaps. This type of veneer gives its owner a new smile without the slightest pain!

Firstly, a complete examination of the teeth is important because veneers can only be installed on healthy teeth that are not affected by caries. After the first consultation and thorough assessment of the teeth condition, a three-dimensional modeling of the jaw is performed. Based on the three-dimensional model a wax copy is built according to the patient's wishes. This so-called mock-up is primarily used familiarize the patient with the expected result. All individual wishes of the patient who gets a chance to see his new smile with the help of the model are taken into account. If the patient is satisfied, the shaping of veneers in a dental laboratory using pressing or CAD/CAM methods is performed.

You should fear no complications. All types of veneers are made of biocompatible materials. If the patient suffers from dental phobia, they are offered to have local anesthesia before the preparation of teeth for the veneers placement. The procedure of veneers installation itself is almost painless, but due to the treatment of the teeth surface, the patient may experience some discomfort. Removal of surface enamel can also lead to increased temperature sensitivity. After the installation of veneers it is important to follow some rules: try not to eat too hard food, as veneers can break or fall out from the high pressure on the tooth. In this case, the correction or installation of new veneers will be required.

The veneers are quite expensive. Medical insurance companies do not cover the costs of veneers installation, and private insurance companies and additional dental insurance packages can compensate only for some of the expenses.

The prices for veneers indicated on our website reflect their approximate cost. The price depends on the brand of materials and medical, laboratory and other expenses. In addition, in most cases, additional processing is required, for example: teeth whitening, professional cleaning, orthodontic and gum correction.

Complex procedures require more dentist's time, there may be additional costs for special models and temporary plastic veneers. If you need to restore several teeth, the price drops compared to the price for the restoration of one tooth.

Composite veneers: starting from 80€

Conventional veneers: 400-900€

Non-Prep veneers: 600-1100€

Veneers to-Go: 350-400€

The innovative process allows to install veneers for prices that are attractive to patients. You can quickly achieve the desired result in only one visit the dentist.

How is that possible?

The new process is based on advanced developments in the modern dental industry: the ready-made plates that are available in various shapes and sizes are used. When the patient's oral cavity is prepared, the veneers can be attached directly to the teeth. Because there is no need to process the veneers to-Go in a dental laboratory, both the time of intervention and the price of such veneers is lower.

What is the difference between the veneers to-Go and the conventional veneers?

Veneers to-Go are made of ceramics or plastic and ceramics composites (more than 80 percent of such composites are nanoceramic fillers). They have the perfect color as close to the natural teeth shade as possible. The unique production process combined with the laser coated surface, give the ceramic plates their natural appearance and excellent physical properties. Most of the cosmetic and therapeutic indications for traditional ceramic veneers also apply to the innovative veneers to-Go.

When can veneers to-Go be used?

The main indications for the installation of the veneers to-Go are anatomical deformations of the teeth, such as small or heavily worn teeth. This aesthetic procedure is fast and effective.

The preparation of the veneers requires small amount time: the dentist only slightly grinds the surface of the teeth making it possible to use veneers to-Go as a temporary solution for children. In contrast to conventional veneers, the veneers to-Go are also suitable for patients with a limited budget. In addition, the veneers to-Go can be used if you want to achieve the immediate tooth transformation in just one session. Many patients need to quickly prepare for special events, such as weddings or television interviews. Even after accidents, the veneers to-Go can be used quickly and easily.

How long do veneers to-Go serve?

Veneers to-Go are strong ceramic plates, their properties are the same as of traditional veneers.

How much do veneers cost?

You can have a deal on installation of veneers, in this case the price starts from 390 euros for one veneer.

Do I need to grind my teeth to install veneers?

In most cases, if the teeth are not too small, they do not need to be carefully sanded. Please note that some veneers, such as veneers to-Go, require no prior preparation, only in exceptional cases.
