Dental crown is the easiest and the most widely used denture type. As a rule, everybody sooner or later gets at least one dental crown in his or her life.
Dental crowns are manufactured at dental technical lab upon the dental model prepared by a prosthodontist. As far as aesthetics and functionality are concerned, a dental crown must fully imitate a healthy tooth. Crowns are manufactured at a dental technical lab upon plaster impressions fully in accordance with anatomical features of dental structure.
Dental crowns types
All-metal gold crowns are usually implanted in the place of the teeth not visible when you’re smiling (so-called molar teeth). Although let us give you some advice. Before you give your final consent to a gold crown, discuss it with your partner. Most often your new smile will be seen by a person you share your life with. If the crowns are visible when you’re smiling, then it would be better to choose porcelain crowns – or, at least, porcelain veneers which make the crown look as white as the healthy teeth next to it.
Some crowns are completely made of porcelain (or other ceramic material). The main advantage of this type of crowns is their transparency. It makes them the most popular choice with regard of denture esthetics. However, these natural-looking crowns aren’t as durable as other types of crowns. They make the best choice for front teeth, but not for back teeth because posterior area needs more strength for chewing. The price for such kind of crown makes up about 500-900 euro.
Metal-ceramic crowns are a sort of a cross between all-metal and all-ceramic types. First, a dental mechanic makes a metal carcass tightly fitting to your tooth. Then porcelain covering is fused to the metal which makes the crown as white as a natural tooth. Depending on the situation, it is possible to cover only some parts of the crown with porcelain – those visible when smiling and talking, while the other crown parts remain all-metal. In other cases the crown is completely (or almost completely) made from porcelain. Due to high feasibility rate of such a crown, it is a number treatment among the German patients. Such a crown costs about 300-1000 euro.
Metal-ceramic crowns can be used for front as well as back teeth. They are strong enough to endure biting pressure and they also look really good. However, these crowns have some disadvantages (which dentists, naturally, try to minimize), namely:
Zirconium oxide metal-free crowns – having such qualities as high durability and biocompatibility, zirconium oxide crowns are not inferior to metal-ceramic crowns and even excel them in the aesthetic aspect. Zirconium oxide has almost the same transparency level as natural teeth, which makes it possible to cover zirconium crown carcass with transparent ceramic mixture to achieve best aesthetics results. Such crowns can be implanted on any teeth, including discoloured ones – the gum will still have natural colour. Such a crown would cost about 700еuro
Metal-free crowns are made with the help of CAD/CAM technology, which rules out the possibility of any error making the crown fit tightly. At first, a prototype based on the dental model is created. It is then laser-scanned to produce a computer model. Crown carcass is made of a whole zirconium oxide piece on a computer milling machine. The carcass hue is chosen in accordance with teeth colour. Then the carcass is covered with ceramic mixture.
