Usefull Information About Laser Eye Surgery

The department of ophthalmology at the integrative center “CIM“ in Germany offers several treatment and diagnosis procedures. The treatment includes traditional, surgical and microsurgical methods. Corrective laser surgery is one of the microsurgical procedures performed by “CIM” center to treat vision disorders. The most common treatment procedures are laser vision correction and anterior segment surgery via femtosecosecond and femto-excimer that allow the specialists to clear vision of the patient. Diagnosis methods and laser surgical procedures cost about 2000-3000 Euros (for one eye). The total price, however, depends on the individual symptoms and indications of a patient.

The ophthalmology department of the clinic in Stuttgart offers all forms of corrective laser surgery including the innovative non-contact LASIK excimer procedure. The laser eye center uses also such microsurgical procedures like surgery at anterior and posterior segment of the eyeball as well as optic nerve regeneration, corneal transplant surgery, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and cataract disease, implantation of IOL (intraocular lens) and so on. The physician-in-chief of the department Prof. MD Florian Gekeler is a highly experienced ophthalmology surgeon. He is conducting scientific research at the University of Stuttgart applying newest laser surgical equipment. The procedures cost approximately 1 500 Euros and more (per one eye). The preoperative diagnosis costs about 450 Euros (full ophthalmologic examination including corneal topography with videokeratoscope).

The physician-in-chief of the eye surgery center “Augenlaserteam“ in Munich is Thomas Christman. For the treatment of vision disorders the center uses different surgical and non-surgical procedures. It performs about 4000 laser surgeries per year. The laser eye center in Germany takes 2 500 euro and more for a surgery. The modern technologies enable not only to correct vision, but also to maintain good eyesight.

The eye center “Landshut“ uses one of the best and innovative surgical techniques in Germany to correct vision disorders. Head physicians of the center are Prof. MD Sachsenweger, MD Reiter MD Eckhard and MD Spitzlberger. The eye center they specializes in refractive surgical methods like LASIK, LASEK, Epi-LASEK and PRK. These new surgical procedures make possible to cure such vision disease that could not be treated until recently. Moreover the center team of the specialists performs also plastic surgery, e.g. blepharoplasty and surgical correction of strabismus.

The physician-in-chief Prof. MD Volker Rummelt and his team of professionals in the eye center “Oberstenfelt” in Germany perform over 10 different laser surgical treatments. It is used successfully to treat cataracts (including IOL implantation), glaucoma and macular degeneration, but also to correct crossed eyes and cure age-related disorders of the conjunctiva. The ophthalmologists of the eye center perform the surgery very quickly and precisely via modern optical systems.

The center “Sehkraft“is one of the best eye surgery centers in Germany. Its specialization is corrective eye surgery, e.g. intraocular microsurgery and cataract surgery. “Sehkraft” is the very first center in Germany that has used implantation KAMRA system that enables to treat all forms of refractive errors. Every year the eye center performs about 2000 laser surgeries heal disorders od the eyesight. Those procedures cost approximately 2000 Euros.

The eye center “Artemis” in Frankfurt first performed corrective eye surgery in 1991. Now it offers all possible procedures in laser surgery. The center enables surgeons to improve vision quality up to 10 diopter and in cases of astigmatism up to 5 diopter. Corrective eye surgery includes also such procedures like femtosecond laser surgery, basis correction, Super-LASIK, custom Wavefront LASIK and trans-epithelial laser vision correction. The “Artemis” center is certified by German association of ophthalmologists.

The center corrective eye surgery “Am Kröpke” was founded in Hannover in 1995. It specializes in laser vision correction to treat vision disorders like near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism. The eye center performs surgery due to modern and innovative surgical methods, e.g. PRK, LASIK, LASEK and Epi-LASIK. Since this year the clinic also uses Excimer Laser MEL 80. Due to ultra-high frequency of laser impulses (up to 250 Hz) it is possible to treat the most complex corneal disorders in smoothiest way.

In laser eye centers in Germany specializing in laser vision correction you will primarily be able to have a medical consultation with the surgeon and talk about the whole process of laser treatment. You will get the necessary information and answers to all your questions. Experienced surgeons of German eye centers for laser vision correction have successfully performed laser surgery for many years and achieved best results. Guided by the laws of medical ethics, the German medical specialists do laser vision correction only after a full assessment of the risk to the patient’s health.

At the laser eye centers in Germany the specialists know that eyes are the most important sensory organ. For them health of patients has the major priority. So that’s why they are using the latest laser equipment and the most precise, computer-controlled lasers.

At German laser eye centers the most common way to treat vision disorders is to use the excimer laser. Ophthalmologists often use the technique of the flying spot. The beam of the excimer laser scans the eye surface that should be treated and via many small impulses it reshapes the cornea. This spearing treatment has less complication because of minimal electric impulses.

Excimer laser vision correction is equipped with a control system, which is highly precise and sets the laser beam onto the area that should be treated. This corrective laser surgery enables to eliminate the involuntary eye movement of the patient. The procedure is very precise and can be used to treat patients with “dancing eyes” (nystagmus).

Topographic excimer laser system is used in accordance to individual characteristics of each eye. The laser scans the cornea and sends the beam in the needed direction. That’s why it removes only certain parts of the cornea, so the surrounded tissue can stay without damages. Topographic laser treatment is commonly used for postoperative correction (e.g. scars or irregular astigmatism).

LASIK surgery is one of the most effective and common vision surgical procedures used in eye centers Germany and all over world for more than 25 years. The surgeon performs LASIK with special automatically controlled and very small and precise knife called microkeratome. This surgical technique creates a small flap in the cornea. During the surgery the flap is folded back by the surgeon and he ablates a tiny piece of tissue from the cornea. This method enables the surgeon to improve patients’ ability to see. Afterwards the surgeon brings the flap back to its place, which makes natural healing process possible.

Advantages of LASIK:

  • quick rehabilitation (1 day)
  • painless postoperative period
  • repeated surgery possible
  • long-term treatment results
  • predictive results
  • low infection risks

Disadvantages of LASIK:

  • possible flap complications
  • complex surgery technique (mistakes during the surgery are possible)
  • one month after the surgery no strenuous activity allowed

Most eye centers in Germany offer such surgical procedures like femtosecond LASIK or “Bladeless” LASIK. These treatments are innovative in the modern medicine and guarantee efficient treatment results. Nowadays femtosecond LASIK is used in 90 percent of patients to correct vision diseases. This laser surgery procedure is also more smoothie than the common LASIK method.

The infrared beam of the ultrashort pulse laser removes the outer layer of the cornea. There is no mechanical tools needed and the patient doesn’t have any scars after the surgery. This procedure is very simple, because the surgeon doesn’t have to make an incision. Infrared femtosecond laser sends ultra short light impulses into the cornea with a predetermined depth. Due to the laser energy little carbon dioxide and water bubbles occur. Many sent impulses perforate the tissue (make a hole). This enables to reshape the cornea surface and clear the vision.

After the corrective surgery with excimer laser the flap is put back. Already after few hours the healing process begins and the bubbles disappear.

Femto-LASEK procedure is very popular because it is more comfortable for patients.

The huge advantage of the Femto-LASEK method is the very precise and accurate surgical process. It enables ophthalmologists to treat patient with severe nearsightedness and thin cornea. This procedure will be the most comfortable and effective for you!

LASEK surgery is often used in German eye centers. A special alcohol solution loosens the outer layer of the cornea (epithelial tissue) that is lifted. After laser reshaping the epithelial tissue is moved back and covered with a protecting lens.

Another form of LASEK corrective surgery is Epi-LASEK. During Epi-LASEK a special tool “dries out” the epithelial tissue that separates it from the eye without loosen it.

Advantages of LASEK procedure:

  • simple corrective eye surgery techique
  • can be used in patients with a very thin cornea
  • acceptable method to correct nearsightedness up to -6 dipoter, farsightedness up to +3 diopter and astigmatism up to -4 diopter
  • strenuous activity allowed few days after the surgery

Disadvantages of LASEK procedure:

  • postoperative possible aches
  • longer rehabilitation (up to 10 days)
  • light blurred vision
  • repeated surgery is needed for a postoperative correction

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is the “oldest” and original laser vision correction technology. After the development of painless LASIK procedure Trans-PRK has lost its popularity because no one wanted to suffer from post-operative pain.

Later PRK has been developed and refined to transepithelial PRK. The epithelial tissue is now removed not mechanically, but via laser. Afterwards the surgeon reshapes the outer surface of the cornea. A tissue removal is performed directly on the stromal layer. The laser-treated area is covered with a contact lens until the epithelium is healed.

Unlike classical photorefractive keratectomy the wound remaining after transepithelial PRK is much smaller, the surgery is less painful and the rehabilitation is faster.

Advantages of Trans-PRK:

  • simple procedure
  • less complications
  • acceptable prices
  • strenuous activity after only a few days

Disadvantages of Trans-PRK:

  • postoperative pains
  • longer recovery (3 to 5 days)
  • possible blurred vision
  • the procedure is not used to treat farsightedness
