About Prof. MD J. Rosenecker
Alpenklinik Santa Maria, run by an Augsburg-based Catholic youth welfare organisation, specialises in paediatric allergology, skin problems (in particular neurodermatitis), pulmonology and obesity. The team comprises paediatricians, paediatric psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, medical technical assistants, paediatric nurses and tutors.
The hospital's main focus is inpatient rehabilitation for chronically sick patients. It is situated 1,200m above sea level and the high-altitude climate has a positive effect on the health of patients with chronic illnesses. Clinical studies have shown that three to four weeks of treatment at an altitude of 1,200m significantly reduces the severity of neurodermatitis, thereby considerably improving the patient's illness. High-altitude climate therapy has emerged as a field of medicine in recent years, one in which the Alpenklinik has specialised.
The reduced level of pollutants in the air promotes the healing of inflamed airways and therefore quickly alleviates the symptoms of bronchial asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses. The effects of climatic therapy are also significant in patients with mucoviscidosis (cystic fibrosis), a congenital metabolic disorder affecting the lungs. UV rays are stronger in the mountains, which results in increased vitamin D3 production. This has been proven to have a highly positive impact on the immune system. Doctors at the Santa Maria specialise in paediatric allergology and paediatric pulmonology. Following a well-founded diagnosis, they draw up an individual therapy plan for each patient that is implemented by appropriately trained medical staff.
Every year, the Alpenklinik treats over 1,000 patients with bronchial asthma, around 700 patients suffering from neurodermatitis and more than 500 clinically obese children.
Professor Josef Rosenecker has been Medical Director and Senior Consultant at the Alpenklinik Santa Maria since 1 February 2012. He is highly experienced, having worked for many years at the Children's Hospital of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California (UCSF). Professor Rosenecker has written numerous publications and published text books on paediatric treatment. His research into pulmonary illnesses has won a number of awards. Besides being Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Rosenecker coordinates a multicentric network for the research of rare diseases, which is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The Sophie Scholl School is part of the Alpenklinik Santa Maria and specialises in teaching children who have to spend long periods in hospital due to chronic illness. The Sophie Scholl School is a government-approved facility that uses new teaching concepts to cater to students' individual level of achievement and structures lessons around what is required by the children's schools back home. The school's teaching concept has become well known throughout Germany and won the Robert Bosch Foundation's German School Award in 2010.
Doctors, psychologists, tutors and nurses prepare patients and their parents for the period after the time spent in hospital so that they are able to deal adequately with the chronic illness once back at home and still enjoy a good quality of life.
